A scripture he lived by

Well done, good and faithful servant.
Matthew 25:23

Origins

A gentle beginning

Derrick Antwi was born on 5 May 1990 in Ghana. He was the kind of boy neighbours remembered for how carefully he listened. He grew up in a home where hard work was ordinary and kindness was a rule, not an occasion.

From an early age, those who knew him noticed a steadiness in him. He was gentle without being timid, and generous without needing to be asked.

Formation

Faith, family, and study

Faith shaped the rhythm of his life. Sundays anchored the week, and scripture anchored the Sundays. It was there that he first learned the language he would live by. That language was service, humility, and a stubborn belief that people are worth loving well.

He studied with the same seriousness he brought to everything. Not to be seen, but to be prepared for the work he sensed was coming.

Work

A life given to others

In adulthood, Derrick found his calling in the small, unglamorous acts that make a community possible. Showing up. Remembering names. Giving what he had.

He was the person friends called when they had run out of options, and the one strangers thanked long after he had forgotten what he had done for them.

The long illness

Grace under weight

The final years asked more of him than most of us are ever asked. He carried illness the way he had carried everything else. Without complaint. With dignity. And without ever asking to be pitied.

Even in the hardest weeks, he made room for other people. He listened. He prayed. He said thank you.

His last words

Tell them I loved them. Tell them to keep caring for each other. That is the whole of it.
